Baptism - Long Fabric Waves

I learned this idea from Sharla Dance of Teaching Primary Music.

I used this activity for the 3rd verse of the Baptism song, which has the following lyrics:

Now we know that we must also

Witness faith in Jesus’ word,

Be baptized to show obedience,

As was Jesus Christ, our Lord.

For this activity you need a long rectangle of blue fabric. I used 2 long bedsheets. Mine were queen size. I used safety pins to pin them together and make one extra long piece of fabric. I asked for 2 adult volunteers - 1 to hold each end of the fabric. I asked them to slowly lift the fabric up and down to make waves. 

They continued to make the waves, while we sang through the 3rd verse and the children took turns walking under the waves. After going under the waves, they turned around, got back in line, and repeated while we sang through the song several times.

It was a great visual and experiencial lesson to act out going under the "water" as a symbol for baptism. The kids loved this activity!
